Institute's mission/description: The Forschungsinstitut für Mathematik, founded 1964 by B. Eckmann, is an independent unit of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich. The goal of FIM is to create a lively mathematical environment in which contacts of lasting value between faculty members of the Department of Mathematics of ETH, graduate students, members of the Swiss mathematical community at large and leading international researchers can be established. To achieve this goal FIM sets up an invitation programme, and organizes scientific activities like workshops, minicourses, conferences and advanced graduate courses given by invited leading mathematicians.
